Wynn Joins Former Redskins Super Bowl Quarterback Doug Williams
to Announce the Prince George’s Classic Football Game
WASHINTON, DC- Yesterday, Congressman Wynn joined Doug Williams and local
leaders Mike Little, Petey Green of the Prince George’s Black Chamber
of Commerce, County Executive Jack Johnson, and Lt. Gov. Michael Steele
in announcing the inaugural Prince George’s Classic Football Game. The
game will be held September 18, 2004 at the Fed Ex Field in Landover,
Maryland. This year’s game will be a face off between the
Howard University Bisons and the Grambling State University Tigers.
Doug Williams, former Redskins Quarterback, is currently Grambling State’s
football coach. Doug is notably remembered for leading the Washington
Redskins to a 42-10 victory against the Denver Broncos during the 1988
Super Bowl. Williams was also the first black quarterback to be
a first round draft pick, and start in a Super Bowl.
The Football Classic is projected to be an economic bonanza for Prince
George’s County, attracting $15 to 20 million in spending, and
will be part of a package of activities including golf tournaments, fashion
shows, parties, and receptions. Wynn hopes the annual game will
come to be seen as a regional homecoming, part of the tradition of Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s.) The game will also
include performances by the fabulous and renowned Grambling marching
band, as well as other bands from noted HBCU’s.
“This event will be a great economic boom for Prince George’s
County tourism, as well as a cultural event for much of our region. I
am honored to have an event of this caliber come to Prince George’s
County. Not only will this game be a wonderful tradition, but it
will also give small businesses an opportunity to benefit from the influx
in tourism, said Wynn.
